A spanking New Year is upon us and I have a wish for me and you.
Close to midnight on New Year’s Eve, I stand outside in my yard, alone, and face North. I generally have a drink in my hand because I toast the past year, wish it well as it turns into a new set of days to count down. I wipe my lips and blow a kiss northward. It’s a magical kiss. First it touches all the dreams that the old year brought. The breathtaking ones that inspired stories, those I wrote, those sketched unfinished, and the many which escaped my grasp because they vaporized with the dawn. I pucker up for another kiss. This one takes a stiff breath for it’s intended for the possibilities that are ahead, the hardships that are bound to follow, the mistakes, goals, triumphs, lessons, it’s my kiss to the optimism of a new year. You could say it ends kissing luck.
I then blow another kiss. It’s a gigantic magical kiss for it bounces atop the heads of everyone in my family, including those near and tucked in their beds snoring, as well as those far away. That same kiss stops, pivots, then hops along finding all my old friends. When it finishes silently touching each one, it seeks out those I have yet to meet.
Finally, I release the softest of kisses. It’s a very special kiss. I blow a kiss to my muse. And of course I giggle hoping he feels it. I have done so for many, many years. Then I look for a star close to Orion and I make a wish. That, sorry to say, I cannot share with you.
Tonight I will do the same. I will stand northward in my yard blowing kisses and making a wish. However, this year there will be several important wishes to make and one I’d like to share with you now. To all who are skipping down the slippery slope, it looks like the year might have some rocky moments. So I wish for added persistence and perseverance for us all. Dreams and kisses, family and friends, hugging far away muses will take wisdom, tolerance, kindness, understanding, diligence, whimsy, and most of all the simplicity of love. So I wish all of this for all of us. Happy New Year.
